Is it normal for trainers to struggle with participant engagement? Yep, most of us bombed a room before we figured out how to truly hold it. And, in saying that, if you are struggling with getting engagement this is a sign from the 'gods of learning', that if you are intending on being a great trainer/facilitator this is a problem you need to fix. 

How can you tell if your workshop design is actually working for participants? When it meets the needs of the participants, they are engaged and fully present in the session, and that aligns with the desired outcomes from the person/organisation paying for the training. 

What are clear signs that you need to improve your training delivery methods? There's minimal interaction, no forthcoming answers to your questions, learners are disengaged in the learning and reading ahead, or talking among themselves, there's minimal interaction, or feedback that says "fine," and you're talking more than they are doing.

Here's the brutal truth: your brilliant content is working against you. When you deliver information passively, you create what researchers call an "illusion of learning."
