Step Up and Stretch: The Power of Baby Steps

A man with many questions

As we wrap up another Communicate Powerfully programme, I’m always in awe of the incredible transformation learners undergo. At the start, many are hesitant, even resistant to the idea of presenting. But by the end, they stand confidently, sharing their insights with authenticity and pride. It's inspiring to see how consistent practice and applying new skills over time can turn what once felt daunting into something natural.

Growth doesn’t require giant leaps; often, it’s the small, regular steps that lead to lasting change. Just like the concept of stepping out of your comfort zone, moving into a stretch zone allows you to develop new abilities gradually, without overwhelming yourself. Think of it like gently expanding a balloon instead of stretching it until it bursts

The more you spend time safe in your comfort zone, the more it can shrink.

However, by nudging yourself into the growth zone with baby steps, you slowly expand that comfort zone. For example, if you choose just one thing—a small stretch, a challenge that feels slightly uncomfortable but achievable—you’ll find that with time, that challenge becomes part of what you naturally do.

This approach avoids the shock of leaping too far into your panic zone. If you push too hard too fast, you might feel like you’re snapping back to an even smaller comfort zone, like being slingshot back with a bungee cord. Instead, tiny, incremental steps build resilience. Each small stretch helps you get comfortable with the discomfort, letting you move forward with care and intention. You start to recognise, “This is good for me; I want this growth more than I want to stay where I am.”

Ultimately, the more time you spend in your stretch zone, the more competent and confident you become. Growth is a journey, and each small step, done regularly, creates lasting progress.

So, what’s one thing you could do today to nudge yourself into your stretch zone?

Take that step—and then tell us about it! Let’s celebrate those wins, no matter how small they may seem. They’re all part of the journey to expanding what’s possible.

Curious about where you currently fit? We’ve created a quick quiz that helps you identify which zone you’re most comfortable in right now—comfort, growth, or danger zone. Take the quiz here and find out how you can start stretching yourself just a little bit more!
